Fag End

Idly looking through old church magazines, as is my wont, I come across the article printed when I last had a "go" at giving up cigarettes. Two years ago now, I remember it lasting about a month before I was back on again. I remember blaming stress!

The urge to quit is again rising within me, and the recent rise in cigarette prices have helped, I guess. It's about getting psyched up again, and setting a date for quitting. Watch this space!

Admit you love smoking. Admit you don't give a damn that you'll die younger if you smoke because smoking is so great it's worth it. Then stop smoking because those bastard, do goody, fascist health freaks and money grabbing politicians have made it financially impossible for the working man to enjoy the one habit that made our miserable lives bearable whilst the rich enjoyed themselves.

Remember - Anger is your friend.

I'm now at week four and I'm still bloody angry.

You're right, again, MP!

Aye. And it really annoys them at the stop smoking clinic when they ask you, "Why do you want to give up smoking?" And you reply, "I don't. I love smoking. And I'm going to heaven if I die in 40 years from old age or next year from lung cancer."

I mentioned this to my doc yesterday. She said I would not die happy but in great pain and distress. Aye, I thought, but with a fag in my hand!

As we clergy know full well, there are many ways of dying in great pain and distress, lung cancer is only one of them. I've certainly ministered to far more cancer patients who have never smoked than lung cancer patients.

I expect most cancer is caused by pollution (from vehicle fumes especially) and fertiliser residue in our food. I also think there is a huge cover up about the real effect of the Chernobyl disaster.

But I find the fact that the authorities believe the most important thing to people is living as long as possible very telling.
